Purpose and historyThe main purpose of the EWG-DSS - EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems is to establish a platform for encouraging state-of-the-art high quality research and collaboration work within the DSS community. Other aims of the EWG-DSS are to:

• Encourage the exchange of information among practitioners, end-users, and researchers in the area of Decision Systems.
• Enforce the networking among the DSS communities available and facilitate activities that are essential for the start-up of international cooperation research and projects.
• Facilitate professional academic and industrial opportunities for its members.
• Favour the development of innovative models, methods and tools in the field Decision Support and related areas.
• Actively promote the interest on Decision Systems in the scientific community by organizing dedicated workshops, seminars, mini-conferences and conference streams in major conferences, as well as editing special and contributed issues in relevant scientific journals.

The EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) was founded during a memorable EURO Summer Institute on DSS that took place at Madeira, Portugal, in May 1989. This Summer Institute was organised by Jean-Pierre Brans and José Paixão. It counted with the participation of 24 young researchers of 16 different nationalities. Most of them still continue nowadays to pursue their goals, working actively in their research areas.

The number of EWG-DSS members has substantially grown along the years with members coming from various different nationalities. There has also been established quiet a few well-qualified research co-operations within the group members, which have generated valuable contributions to the DSS field in journal publications.

Since its creation, the EWG-DSS has held annual Meetings in various European countries, and has taken active part in the EURO Conferences on decision-making related subjects.

Since 2007 the EWG-DSS has been managed by a Coordination Board. One of the aims of this coordination board is to better promote joint-work among the group members and to encourage more participation of the whole group in DSS related projects and events.

In the period of June 2007 to January 2011 the EWG-DSS Coordination Board was composed by 3 founding members: Pascale Zaraté, Fatima Dargam and Rita Ribeiro.

From 2011 to 2013, the EWG-DSS Managing Board has doubled in number of members. Besides the old coordinators, now we count with the assistance of 3 new Board Members (Jorge Hernández; Boris Delibasic and Shaofeng Liu) to better administrate the activities of the group, as well as to bring new ideas to it. From 2013 (officially Jan. 2014) onwards, the EWG-DSS Coordination Board added 2 more members (Isabelle Linden and Jason Papathanasiou) and is composed of 8 coordinators listed before.

Research conducted in the EWG-DSS group has as its central theme DSS( Decision Support Systems), as well as Decision Making Processes and Analysis. Some areas including Data-Mining, Data Warehouse, Knowledge Management, among others are also of relevance to some of the group members.

Within the EWG-DSS meetings, discussions concerning current research trends and the future of DSS always arise. Questions as for example: "What are the impacts of emerging web-technologies on Decision Sciences?", "How will DSS be in the next decade?", and "How is Decision Making influenced by the Internet Age?" often are asked. Some of those questions are answered by themselves as time goes by, with the projects that are developed in the area and presented in the DSS Streams of the major IT and OR Conferences. Through those projects' presentations and publications we become aware of the current tendencies in the Decision Making area. And through our "engagement" in developing and enhancing new strategies for Decision Support Systems, we keep the area alive and healthy and at the same time, we indirectly guide its way to a new DSS generation.

  • Interaction Platforms of the EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems

    • EWG-DSS Blog & LinkedIN EWG-DSS Group

The creation of the EWG-DSS blog, as well as the creation of the EWG-DSS group in LinkedIn go towards the Group-Coordination-Board’s main goals of providing new ways to keep us working together, as well as of innovating our interaction approaches. We encourage the interest and cooperation of all researchers, who participate in this blog and who join the EWG-DSS Group in LinkedIn. Both environments serve as platforms for all of us, members of the group, to better interact as well as have a better reach of our academic production within the various fields around Decision Support.

    • A Social-Academic Network for EWG-DSS

The Coordination Board is currently also conducting a study about research interests of the group members, to draw a knowledge map on Decision Support Systems. This project targets mainly to disseminate research being conducted by members of the group. As a primary step, we will develop a social structure for the group, using us – the group members – as its defined population. By doing this, we will devise a social-academic network analysis for identifying the collaboration relationship that exits among the EWG-DSS members on one hand, and also provide a useful feedback for further collaboration in joint research on the other, hopefully encouraging new research and academic cooperation within the group.

Recent Publication about this Collaboration Network Project:
Title: "The Development Roadmap of the EWG-DSS Collab-Net Project: A Social Network Perspective of DSS Research Collaboration in Europe". Authors: Fatima C.C. • In 2014, the EWG-DSS co-organized the GDN 2014 - Joint International Conference of the EURO Working Group on DSS and the INFORMS GDN Section - with a special focus on Group Decision Making and Web 3.0. The GDN Section of INFORMS and the EURO Working Group on DSS organized the GDN2014 international conference in Toulouse, France, at University Toulouse 1 Capitole, IRIT, on June 10th-13th,2014.
Group decision and negotiation focuses on complex and self-organizing processes that constitute multiparticipant, multicriteria, ill-structured, dynamic, and often evolutionary problems. Major approaches include: (1) applied game theory, experiment and social choice, (2) cognitive and behavioral sciences as applied to group decision and negotiation, (3) conflict analysis and resolution (4) software, specifically group decision support systems (GDSS) and negotiation support systems (GDNSS), (5) artificial intelligence, and (6) management science as related to group decision-making. Many research initiatives combine two or more of these fields.

Since its creation in 1989, the EWG-DSS group has annually organized research meetings, workshops, joint mini-conferences and conferences with other groups (check here for more details). The EWG-DSS series of International Conferences on Decision Support Systems Technology (ICDSST), starting with the ICDSST-2015 in Belgrade, were planned to consolidate the tradition of annual research events organized by the EURO EWG-DSS group. The ICDSST Conferences offer the European and International DSS Communities, including the academic and the industrial sectors, opportunities to present state-of-the-art DSS developments and to discuss about the current challenges that surround Decision-Making processes, focusing on realistic but innovative solutions; as well as on potential new business opportunities.

The main purpose of the EWG-DSS International Conference on Decision Support Systems Technology (ICDSST 2015), with its main theme on “Big Data Analytics for Decision Making”, was to attract researchers, developers and specialists of the related areas of decision-making, its methodologies and technologies; as well as application oriented practitioners directed to the implementation of big data analytics solutions, to get together in order to exchange experiences and identify the key issues within various decision-making application areas, so that exploitation of new approaches and tools for dealing with Big Data in Decision Making processes can be effectively implemented in future developments.
