
Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann, former professor at RWTH Aachen University and founder of EURO, passed away on May 14. We will always remember him as a pioneer of Operations Research (OR) and Fuzzy Set Theory, founding President of EURO, former President of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), and founder of INFORM GmbH. His visionary work left an indelible mark on science, industry, and the global OR community.
Shortly before his passing, Prof. Zimmermann was informed of his induction into the IFORS Hall of Fame—an honor that was formally commemorated at the IFORS Triennial Conference in Vienna in July 2026, where he stands as the first scholar from Germany to receive this distinction.
Born in Berlin on May 10, 1934, Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann began his career with a commercial apprenticeship before pursuing engineering studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt, graduating as Diplom-Ingenieur in 1959. Following a year of study at the University of Oxford, he completed a degree in business engineering (Diplom- Wirtschaftsingenieur) and earned his doctorate (Dr. rer. pol.) in mathematical economics and business administration at the Technical University of Berlin.
Following a period of working in industry, he accepted a professorship at the University of Illinois, later holding visiting positions across Europe, India, and the United States. He was awarded honorary doctorates by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and Åbo Akademi University in Turku, Finland. From 1967 until his retirement in 1999, he held the Chair of Operations Research at RWTH Aachen University, where he also served as Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics from 1988 to 1991.
At RWTH Aachen, Prof. Zimmermann was a dedicated mentor to generations of scholars and practitioners. He established the pioneering Master of Operations Research (M.O.R.) postgraduate program. His former students fondly recall the practical projects where final presentations were traditionally hosted at the Zimmermann family home, paired with warm hospitality and fine selections from his red and white wine cellars.
Over his prolific academic career, he published more than 260 research papers and 40 books. From 1978 to 1999, he served as founding editor of the European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR), the International Journal for Fuzzy Sets and Systems, and the International Series in Intelligent Technologies, alongside editorial roles for twelve other international journals.
While his early academic work focused on decision support under uncertainty using stochastic methods, Prof. Zimmermann became a worldwide leader in Fuzzy Set Theory and its applications beginning in 1972. He made seminal contributions to Fuzzy Mathematical Programming, Fuzzy Control & Expert Systems as well as Intelligent Data Mining & Data Analysis.
His methodologies found widespread application in strategic planning, logistics, simultaneous engineering, and management decision-making. By integrating fuzzy logic into Operations Research, he revolutionized how complex real-world problems with vagueness and uncertainty could be mathematically solved.
Prof. Zimmermann’s leadership in building international scientific bridges was extraordinary:
In 1970, he played a crucial role in merging the two existing German OR societies, serving as the unified organization's first president. In 1972, he convened the initial meeting of European OR society leaders in Dublin, leading to the creation of EURO in Brussels in 1975. Together with Jean Pierre Brans, he co-founded the European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR), which remains one of the world's flagship OR publications. Throughout his service, he consistently championed international cooperation and promoted the involvement of researchers from developing nations.
In 1969, Prof. Zimmermann founded INFORM GmbH (Institut für Operations-Research und Management) in Aachen—one of Europe's earliest software companies dedicated to AI and OR applications. Long before artificial intelligence entered mainstream discourse, he demonstrated that algorithmic decision support could generate immense efficiency and practical economic value.
Under his scientific direction, INFORM grew into a global software provider whose optimization algorithms now execute billions of decisions daily across aviation, logistics, manufacturing, telecommunications, and finance. Today, the company employs over 1,000 people across six continents, standing as a living monument to his conviction that high-level research must serve real-world societal needs.
Throughout his lifetime, Prof. Zimmermann received the highest international accolades in his field, as EURO Gold Medal (1985) – Highest European distinction in OR, K.S. Fu Award – North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society, Moisil Prize and Gold Medal (1993), Kaufmann Prize (1997), European Pioneers Award for Fuzzy Systems (1999), Fuzzy Systems Pioneer Award (2011), IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, First Honorary Member of the German Operations Research Society (GOR), Fellow of IFSA & IFORS Hall of Fame Inductee (2026).
When we personally brought him the news of his IFORS Hall of Fame induction in January, he was deeply touched and humbled by this recognition of his life’s work.
Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann achieved significant scientific progress through his own insights, numerous publications, and their application in business practice. He supported his many former staff members in their individual development and fostered the career paths of countless national and international researchers. In all his endeavors, he was progressive, inspiring and constructive. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.
The GOR owes him an immense debt of gratitude and will always honor his memory.
