Special Issue: Problem Structuring Research and Practice

Guest Editors: Fran Ackermann, L. Alberto Franco, Etiënne Rouwette, Leroy White

  • Deadline for submission: March 15, 2013

Motivation

Problem structuring has long been acknowledged as a core modeling activity in the practice of operational research. What is modeled and how influences the way the problem is understood, therefore guiding the actions of individual, groups and organizations. Although there is a significant literature on problem structuring support, much more work is needed in this growing area of operational research and management science. This Special Issue will present important advances on problem structuring research and practice at individual, group and organizational levels.

Contents

The Guest Editors invite submissions that focus on problem structuring processes in operational research. We welcome empirical and theoretically grounded papers that make clear and important contributions to the research and practice of problem structuring. We expect that the papers build on appropriate qualitative or quantitative research methods in the laboratory or the field. Topics of particular interest may include, but are not limited to:

  • evaluation studies of the impact of problem structuring processes;
  • innovative applications of problem structuring approaches, including those showing the interface between problem structuring and decision making;
  • analyses of how managers use problem structuring or facilitated modeling approaches;
  • methodological advances in problem structuring and facilitated modeling support;
  • development and evaluation of computer technology tools for problem structuring;
  • novel approaches to teaching problem structuring methodologies, techniques and tools;
  • structured problem structuring processes in organizations;
  • examining the impact of the facilitator/modeler in problem structuring processes.

Schedule

Prospective authors are invited to submit a full paper to the Manuscript Central editorial system (https://www.editorialmanager.com/ejdp, article type SI: Problem Structuring). Alternatively, they may send the Guest Editors a three-page extended abstract describing the proposed contribution ([email protected]) for feedback. The planned schedule is as follows:
