Purpose and historyHumanitarian Operations Research studies decision-making problems related to operations that involve preparations to provide logistical assistance for humanitarian purposes, like in response to humanitarian crises including natural and man-made disasters. The primary objective of humanitarian operations is to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain human dignity.

Humanitarian Operations Research is an emerging area in Operations Research that sees a strong contribution from a large number of researchers working in European universities and research centres. Moreover, many humanitarian organizations have their headquarters in European countries and have been collaborating with researchers in this area. The scientific interest and research output on the topic have seen a rapid increase within the last decade. As a result, there arises the need to form an organization that will: 1) bring together the interested parties, 2) generate synergies in collaborative efforts, 3) facilitate timely dissemination of the research results, and 4) support young researchers interested in developing their careers in this area. The purpose of this new EURO Working Group is to create a platform that facilitates communication among the interested parties and form an active group working towards achieving these objectives.

This new EURO Working Group will constitute an aggregation and reference point for the rich and active research community to advance the development and application of Operations Research methods, techniques and tools to the field of Humanitarian Operations. The Group’s meetings should encourage the exchange of information among practitioners and researchers in this area, and stimulate the work on new and important problems with sound scientific methods. Moreover, its members and specific meetings/workshops will actively promote interest on Humanitarian Operations by proposing and editing special and contributed issues in scientific journals. Finally, the group will also facilitate networking activities that are crucial for the proposition of successful international research projects.
Past activitiesThe EURO HOpe has organized two mini-conferences.
1) Hamburg 4-5 March 2016. https://www.the-klu.org/euro-hope/meetings/
2) Vienna 29-30 June 2017.
