Purpose and historyPurpose
The aim of the EWG- ORD is to help raise consciousness and efforts towards the use of Operational Research to achieve the goals of development within and outside of the EURO by:
• Providing opportunities for operational researchers working in the area to gather together, share ideas and collaborate on projects;
• Encouraging interaction among experienced scientists and the enthusiastic youth starting on their career in the field;
• Disseminating state-of-the art knowledge in the field by:
Preparing, refereeing and editing of publications;
Sponsoring regular meetings;
Maintaining information channels;
Supporting research in operational research for development; and
• Promoting the field of OR for development among industrial organizations and users of optimization.

History
EWG-ORD was established with numerous founding members at a satellite meeting of the EURO XXI 2006 Conference. After this start, EWG-ORD organized / co-organized a number of workshops on sustainable living and development in Ankara, Turkey (June 08, 2007; April 13-16, 2008). The first annual meeting was held during its first workshop on OR for developing countries in Prague, Czech Republic on July 2007.
EWG-ORD actively organized / co-organized workshops or streams on operational research for development in EURO 2006, EURO 2007, EURO 2008, IFORS 2008, EURO 2009 and EURO 2010, IFORS 2011, and EURO 2012. These workshops, summer schools, and conferences served to promote the importance of operational research and its related techniques in making the world a better place to live in.
