Purpose and historyThe EURO Working Group on Urban Traffic and Transportation was founded in July 1991 in Cetraro (Italy) during the 7th Euro Summer Institute on Urban Traffic Management, with the editing of a Special Issue of the European Journal of Operational Research (Volume 71, Number 2, 1993) providing a collection of some papers there presented. The name was changed to Transportation during the EURO Conference held in Glasgow, July 1994, in order to enlarge the topics to be addressed and to involve more people in the participation.

The objectives of this EWG are:

  • to provide a forum for exchanging information and experiences of
    research activities in the field of transportation;
  • to encourage joint researches and developments both of theoretical
    methods and applications;
  • to promote cooperation among different institutions and organizations, including leaders at national and international level in the field of traffic and transportation systems.

The primary fields of interest of the EWGT are:
Operational research methods, mathematical models and computational algorithms to solve and support the solution of planning, management and control problems faced by city authorities and public transport companies.

Relevant areas of interest are:

  • traffic control and simulation models;
  • traffic network equilibrium models;
  • land-use and transportation planning;
  • public transport planning and management;
  • applications of combinatorial optimization;
  • intelligent transportation systems;
  • impact evaluation on environment, energy, safety, etc.;
  • freight transportation, logistics and intermodality;
  • vehicle routing and scheduling.

The potential activities of the Working Group can be as follows:

  • organization of meetings and conferences;
  • editing of a Newsletter;
  • promotion of joint research;
  • implementation, comparison and validation of software packages;
  • application and transfer of models and tools to real case-studies;
  • information diffusion by websites;
  • publication of books, conference proceedings and special issues of transportation journals.
