PhD Position in Logistics Planning and Information Systems at TU Darmstadt, Germany

The Department of Business, Economics and Law of TU Darmstadt is setting up a DB Schenker Endowed Assistant Professorship (Juniorprofessur) for Logistics Planning and Information Systems (Dr. Michael Schneider). We invite applications for a vacant position at the rank of

Research Assistant – half-time

Teaching and research of the professorship mainly centers on the development and IT-based realization of quantitative methods for the solution and analysis of logistic planning problems. The methodological focus lies on metaheuristic algorithms and their application in the field of (green) logistics.

The successful candidate will work in an open atmosphere and conduct interesting and challenging research projects whose results are presented at conferences and workshops and published in international journals. In addition, the candidate will support the teaching and self-administration of the professorship.

Prerequisite for the position is an outstanding university degree in (business) informatics, (business) mathematics, industrial engineering, or business studies with a quantitatively oriented major (e.g. Operations Research). In addition, applicants should have a thorough knowledge of software development in a high-level language like Java or C++ and very good English skills.

Ideally, the candidate has previous knowledge in the areas of discrete optimization and logistics planning, especially in the implementation of operations research methods (metaheuristics) and the use of optimization software (e.g. CPLEX or Xpress-MP). Teaching experience, e.g. as a student tutor, knowledge of a scripting language (e.g. Perl, Python) and LaTex typesetting skills are a further plus.

The position is initially assigned for three years. Increasing the position to a 100% level is possible in case further third party funds are acquired. Task fulfillment by the candidate is intended to simultaneously improve his/her scientific skills. Specifically, the candidate is given the opportunity to prepare his/her graduation as PhD.

The Technische Universität Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female faculty members and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Wages and salaries are according to the collective agreements on salary scales, which apply to the Technische Universität Darmstadt (TV-TU Darmstadt).

Please send your application referring to the below stated identification number including all necessary documents (cover letter, CV, graduation results, job certificates, copy of the final thesis), preferably in electronic form, to Dr. Michael Schneider (, TU Darmstadt, Fachbereich Rechts- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften, Dekanat, Hochschulstraße 1, 64289 Darmstadt).
