Focused Issue of Transportation Science on
Freight Transportation and Logistics
Submission Deadline: September 28, 2012
Significant developments are taking place in the area of Freight Transportation and Logistics. These developments answer economic and social challenges, as transportation and logistics systems, together with the organizations making them up or using them, aim to achieve simultaneously the highest levels of efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness, while continuously reducing their environmental footprint and contributing to improving the quality of life of the people and the harmonious development of our society. As witnessed at the recent 5th ODYSSEUS International Workshop of Freight Transportation and Logistics, which took place on May 21-25, 2012 in Mykonos, Greece, very intense and rich research efforts in Operations Research and Transportation Science are being deployed to answer these challenges.
The focused issue on Freight Transportation and Logistics intends to reflect these trends, efforts, and results. The aim is to present original, cutting-edge contributions – methodological and theoretical developments, as well as innovative and insight-provoking applications – that address a wide variety of issues in the modeling, planning, and management of freight transportation and logistics systems. Topics of interest include (but are not restricted to):
• Modal transportation: rail, motor carriers, maritime and interior navigation, etc.;
• Intermodal transportation;
• Vehicle routing, scheduling, and dispatching;
• City logistics;
• Fleet and crew management;
• Design and management of integrated logistics network and supply chains;
• Humanitarian and emergency logistics;
• Network design and planning;
• Terminal management;
• Intelligent transportation systems for freight transportation and logistics;
• Integrated planning of people and freight transportation systems.
Submissions are open to all, independently of participation in the Odysseus workshop. All contributions will be peer reviewed according to the usual standards of the journal.
Submission: Please submit your manuscript online via ScholarOne Manuscripts at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/transci. When choosing Manuscript Type in Step 1 of the submission procedure, enter “Special Issue – Freight Transportation”, otherwise your submission will be handled as a regular manuscript.
