SUMMARY:"Fairness in Sports" workshop
DESCRIPTION:Fairness in sport is not just about assigning the top prizes to the worthiest competitors. It is also about the way the competition itself is organized. How to design rules that do not favor certain competitors? How to design a schedule of play that a priori offers similar chances to each participant? How to reconcile various (often conflicting) requests expressed by the stakeholders? It seems that as financial interests in sports increase\, fairness is increasingly under pressure\, and research on fairness issues in sports is becoming more and more relevant.  The workshop focusses on scientific methods to achieve greater fairness in sports\, both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. \nThe program includes the following speakers: \n** Juan-Moreno Ternero: “Fair resource allocation in sports competitions” \n** Laszlo Csato: “Random matching in balanced bipartite graphs: The (un)fairness of draw mechanisms used in sports” \n** Frits Spieksma: “Fair Schedules for Single Round Robin Tournaments with Ranked Participants” \n** Alessandro Di Mattia: “The Effect of a Structural Change in Round-Robin Tournaments with Four Teams: Evidence from Beach Volleyball” \n** Joonas Pääkkönen: “Hard-to-solve Rogaining Competitions” \n** Dóra Gréta Petróczy: “Alternative UEFA country rankings based on pairwise comparisons” \n** Julien Guyon: TBA \n** Morteza Davari: “Redefining NBA Divisions: A Blueprint for NBA Expansion” \n** Felix Otto: “Measures to increase fairness in subjective performance evaluations” \n** Mehmet Ismail: “Fairer Tournaments: Matching and Scoring Players in Games (Like Chess) and Sports (Like Soccer)” \n  \nThe workshop is a free 1-day event\, which will take place on June 11th\, 2024\, in the historic city of Ghent\, Belgium. \nRegistration is required\, but free (extended deadline: May 26th). \nIt continues a tradition that began in Ghent in 2018 and was followed by an engaging session in London the same year. \nFor more information\, please visit our website at https://www.sportscheduling.ugent.be/FairnessInSports

SUMMARY:AI for Sports Analytics workshop
DESCRIPTION:The past decade has seen a tremendous growth of interest in sports analytics\, not only from an economic and commercial perspective\, but also from a purely scientific one. In fact\, there has been a growing number of papers published at top artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning venues that revolve around problems in sports\, as well as multiple scientific events organized on the topic. Similar to other downstream domains that have benefited from advances of AI and machine learning\, this growth in interest is due to important technological improvements in data collection and processing capabilities\, progress in statistical learning and in particular deep learning\, increased computational resources\, and ever-growing economic activities associated with sports and culture (e.g.\, emergent consultancy ventures revolving around sports data collection and statistics). \nThe purpose of this workshop on AI for Sports Analytics is to bring together AI researchers\, sports data scientists\, and other stakeholders who are interested in the intersection of AI and sports. In particular\, we are interested in attracting work that focuses on the overlap of multiple areas of AI such as machine learning\, game theory\, and computer vision and their application to the sports analytics domain. We also plan to have a strong list of invited speakers\, participant interaction\, and panel discussions. \nThe workshop will be organized at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2021); it will be virtual. \nPlease see the conference website for more details and the call for papers: https://sites.google.com/view/ijcai-aisa-2021/home?authuser=0 \nSubmissions will be handled via EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=aisa2021

SUMMARY:OR in Sports at EURO 2021
DESCRIPTION:The EURO working group “OR in Sports” is organizing a stream on OR in Sports\, as part of the EURO Conference\, July 11-14 2021 in Athens\, Greece (more information about the conference can be found at http://euro2021athens.com/).  We are aiming for a sports track covering various applications and methodologies (e.g. optimization\, statistics\, analytics\, …)\, much like the sessions we had at the previous EURO conferences in Dublin\, Valencia and Poznan. \nGiven the covid-19 pandemic\, the conference will be organaized in HYBRID way (both physical and virtual attendance). In this context\, sessions will be created either with physical presence or with remote participation of the delegates. Also\, when setting up the schedule\, the different time zones of the participants will be considered\, so that they take place at appropriate times. In this way we give the opportunity to the participants\, the choice of how to participate in it. Thus\, each participant can submit his / her work to the conference\, according to the program\, and decide how to participate later at the time of registration. \nNevertheless\, we would like to invite you to submit an abstract to the “OR in sports” stream. You can do this by going to the abstract submission page https://www.euro-online.org/conf/euro31 and use the following invitation code: 09d2f244. \nThe deadline for abstract submission has been extended to May 2\, 2021.

SUMMARY:5th Eastern Conference on Football Economics - 7th Western Conference on Football and Finance
DESCRIPTION:HSE University\, New Economic School\, University of Reading\, and Paderborn University are organizing a conference on the economics and finance of football. It is aimed to highlight high quality research of the football industry as well as to facilitate the cooperation between academics and practitioners. \nThe organizers invite researchers to submit full papers for presentation. Theoretical and empirical research papers that cover the economic\, financial\, social\, and managerial aspects of the football industry are welcome. The list of possible topics includes\, but is not limited to: success factors in football\, football league regulations\, financial fair-play\, tournament design\, contest theory\, optimization of match strategies\, corruption\, betting\, spectators’ demand\, financial and social issues of the World Cup\, scheduling\, referee assignments\, and competitive balance. \nOne of the principal goals of the conference is to provide each speaker the detailed feedback from the communities of sports economists and people working in the field of operations research in sports. For that purpose\, full text of the paper must be submitted through EasyChair by May 15\, 2021. Notifications of acceptance will be sent no later than June 10\, 2021. The program committee will assign a discussant to each paper by June 11\, 2021. Each conference speaker is expected to serve as a discussant for one other paper. Full papers will NOT be published anywhere; each full paper will be sent to one discussant. Submission link is https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=footecfin2021 \nPlenary lectures will be delivered by Helmut Dietl (University of Zurich)\, Bernd Frick (Paderborn University)\, Alex Krumer (Molde University College)\, and Celso Ribeiro (Fluminense Federal University). \nFor more information about the conference\, please visit the website https://www.footballeconomics.ru/ If you have any questions\, please contact Dr. Dmitry Dagaev (dagaev@hse.ru).
