History of EJOR
The idea for a European Journal of Operational Research (EJOR) was first proposed at the first Council Meeting held on 30 January 1975. A committee (G. Kreweras, B. Roy, C.B. Tilanus, and H.-J. Zimmermann) was formed to investigate the desirability of such a venture. Following their recommendations, the Council decided on 8 May 1975 that EJOR should be launched.
The first editorial team was composed of Alan Mercer, Bernhard Tilanus, and Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann. They published the first volume of EJOR in 1977. It consisted of six issues published bimonthly and totalling 420 pages. EJOR has ever since experienced a remarkable growth. Eight volumes composed of three issues each and totalling over 5400 pages were published in 1995, thus making EJOR the largest OR journal worldwide. While the number of volumes and issues has not changed since 1995, the number of pages has fluctuated, and has now stabilized at its present level of around 300 pages per issue. Since 1981 most issues are led by an Invited Review which plays a very significant role in promoting the field of OR.
From 1999 to the present day, EJOR has been fortunate to have had various editorial teams comprising at different times of: Roman Slowinski, Jacques Teghem, Jyrki Wallenius, Lorenzo Peccati, Robert Dyson, Jesus Artalejo, Jean-Charles Billaut, Immanuel Bomze, Emanuele Borgonovo, José Fernando Oliveira, and Ruud Teunter. The editors have always worked as a team, and EJOR has never had a departmental structure typical of other OR journals. As a consequence, EJOR has been more open than other journals to innovative papers that cross the traditional subfields of OR.
