Behavioural OR
Chair(s): L. Alberto Franco (alberto.franco@bristol.ac.uk), Raimo P. Hämäläinen (raimo.hamalainen@aalto.fi)We invite contributions that examine behavioural issues in relation to the design, use and evaluation of OR approaches in both laboratory and field settings, and as input to the development of behavioural models. Central to the growing field of Behavioural OR is a concern with unpacking what people actually do when they engage with OR methods, processes and tools, and how their behaviour affects, or is affected by, OR-supported activity. For background, recent reviews of Behavioural OR can be found at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ejor.2020.11.031 and https://doi.org/10.1080/01605682.2018.1489355 Behavioural OR events are organised regularly by the European Working Group on Behavioural OR, and further information can be found at https://www.euro-online.org/websites/bor/

Problem structuring and soft OR
Chair(s): Leroy White (l.white2@exeter.ac.uk), Mike Yearworth (m.yearworth@exeter.ac.uk)We invite contribution addressing all aspects of Soft Operational Research (Soft OR) and Problem Structuring Methods (PSMs). We have specific sessions devoted to theoretical developments in PSMs, methodological and practical contributions of Soft OR/PSMs to decision and policy making, and understanding the practice of Soft OR/PSMs and linking PSMs to 'hard' models. We consider Soft OR/PSMs relevant to ill-defined problem contexts, the realm of wicked and messy problems. These are characterised i) by the existence of multiple stakeholders with differing perspectives and conflicting objectives, and ii) high uncertainty, qualitative data and limited quantitative data. The process of Soft OR/PSMs typically proceeds through facilitated workshops with stakeholders - including online 'same time/different places’ workshops enabled by Group Support Systems - to seek agreement on the nature of the problem and decide actions. Diagrammatic models that are cognitively accessible to the stakeholders and afford insight into the problem are used as a focus for discussion. Facilitation of the process is concerned with ensuring procedural fairness. For background, recent reviews of Soft OR/PSMs can be found at https://doi.org/10.1287/opre.2020.2051 and https://doi.org/10.1007/s11213-021-09560-1.

Numerical Optimization Methods with Inexact Evaluations of Objective Functions and/or Derivatives
Chair(s): Stefania Bellavia (stefania.bellavia@unifi.it), Daniela di Serafino (daniela.diserafino@unina.it)This stream is aimed to collect talks about numerical optimization methods employing inexact evaluations of objective functions and/or derivatives. Optimization methods for large scale problems continue to grow in importance in big data and machine learning and in applications in areas such as optimal control, logistics and planning, just to name a few. In practice, it may be difficult or impossible to obtain accurate values of the objective function and/or derivatives, and often the computation of such quantities is subject to random noise. Improvement of classical optimization methods is needed to cope with these issues from both a theoretical and practical point of view. The sessions will include, but are not limited to, the following topics: stochastic/randomized optimization methods, inexact deterministic optimization methods, data-driven optimization via neural networks, and applications of the previous techniques.

Splitting and ADMM Methods
Chair(s): Dimitri Papadimitriou (papadimitriou.dimitri.be@gmail.com)Operator splitting methods convert optimization and inclusion problems into fixed-point equations. When applied to general convex optimization and monotone inclusion problems, the equations provided by operator-splitting methods are often easy to solve by standard techniques. In turn, splitting methods provide numerical solutions to several classes of problems that appear in machine learning, statistics but also signal and image processing. Originally designed for solving the monotone inclusion of the sum of two monotone operators, most common schemes include the forward-backward, the Douglas-Rachford, the backward-forward and the forward-backward-forward splitting algorithm. More recently, monotone inclusion problems with the sum of more than two operators have attracted lots of attention. Three-objective convex optimization (involving linear and nonlinear mappings) and other multi-regularization problems have for instance been subject to significant research effort. Further from the algorithmic side, to extend applicability to large scale problems with improved convergence performance, block-iterative (only subgroups of the operators involved need to be activated at each iteration), asynchronous (ability to incorporate at any iteration the result of calculations initiated at earlier iterations), and other acceleration methods (inertial/heavy-ball) have been recently studied. This stream aims at bringing together recent advances in this vast domain from theoretical to computational/applied studies.

Variational analysis and optimization
Chair(s): Maria Josefa Cánovas (canovas@umh.es), Abderrahim Hantoute (hantoute@ua.es), Marco A. López-Cerdá (marco.antonio@ua.es)The aim of this stream is to gather researchers working on optimization and variational analysis to present their recent achievements in the area. The field of continuous optimization and variational analysis covers a large range of modern applied and theoretical mathematics, including convex and nonsmooth analysis, approximation theory, set convergence and variational inequalities. The stream is composed of several sessions dealing with infinite-dimensional subdifferential calculus, (semi-)infinite optimization problems, applications of variational analysis to optimization theory, and splitting methods in convex optimization.
-
Variational Inequalities, Equilibria, Games and Multilevel Optimization
Chair(s): Giancarlo Bigi (giancarlo.bigi@unipi.it), Patrizia Daniele (patrizia.daniele@unict.it), Laura Rosa Maria Scrimali (scrimali@dmi.unict.it)The aim of the stream is to gather researchers working on optimization with a particular focus on variational inequalities, equilibrium problems, game theory and multilevel optimization. Variational inequalities are one of the most challenging and dynamic topics in mathematics, and they cover a large variety of applications related to computer science, mathematical physics, engineering, statistics, and economics. Moreover, recently, equilibrium problems, games and multilevel models, often associated with variational inequalities, experienced a surprising development. This has led to find effective solutions to unsolved problems in numerous real-life situations. We encourage and invite papers on these broad areas. The stream welcomes talks devoted to methodological, theoretical, or even empirical contributions.
-

Data Science Meets Optimization
Chair(s): Patrick De Causmaecker (patrick.decausmaecker@kuleuven.be)The Data Science meets Optimization working group has been organising streams at EURO and IFORS conferences since its creation in 2016. The subject of the working group is the interaction between techniques and algorithms from optimisation and data science. Exact methods from mathematical optimisation as well as heuristic techniques are combined with machine learning, data mining or other techniques to acquire information from historical as well as on-line data and arrive at better algorithms with a wider range of applicability. Also, techniques from data science often significantly benefit from the introduction of state of the art optimisation techniques. The stream welcomes sessions exploring the interaction between these domains of intensive research.

Decision Support Systems
Chair(s): Pavlos Delias (pdelias@af.duth.gr), Isabelle Linden (isabelle.linden@unamur.be)Deciding is a very complex and difficult task, in a way that is natural in a complex or important decision for decision-makers to resort to a decision support technique, among the plethora of techniques that exist and that are continuing to emerge. In parallel, we are witnessing an overt change in the way in which computer technology is enabling us to answer questions that would have defied an answer, perhaps even have defied a formulation, only a few decades ago. As research continues, and new tools, techniques, and methods for decision support continue to be developed, this Stream, organized by the EURO working group on Decision Support System aims at collecting new advancements of the field. We welcome submissions that promote the computational facilitation for Decision Support adopting either a methodological or a theoretical, or even an empirical approach, across four topical sessions.
