Abstract
Problem structuring and Systems approaches have a history that is intertwined with the history of Operations Research. Early approaches that are still popular to varying degrees include the Viable Systems Model, Soft Systems Methodology and the Strategic Choice approach. All of these approaches share some features in common, including diagramming and social interventions such as workshops. A question that seems to have received little attention is why exactly these sorts of approach are effective. This talk offers some initial thoughts.
