Abstract
The impact of OR, a new and rapidly developing field, and the established EURO society with several outstanding researchers on our specific environment is considered from two perspectives. These are organizational and research oriented.
Some personal observations about the advance of OR in the early seventies in Slovenia, a part of former Yugoslavia, the links with EURO, the establishment of SOR, which became a member of EURO only in 2008, and the cooperation of SOR with EURO (and beyond) are briefly discussed in the context of some reminiscences.
From a research perspective, we deal with the so-called Practitioner's OR with the task of model-based decision preparation for the design and control of human-machine-nature systems. The challenges of managing natural resources, environmental systems and landscapes to balance economic, ecological and social goals while ensuring sustainability, biodiversity and resilience are addressed in the frame of moving from deterministic to stochastic approaches, from one goal to multiple goals, from one decision maker to group decisions, from static to dynamic approaches, and combining quantitative and qualitative methods, including the work and merits of Bellman, Saaty, Markov, H. J. Zimmermann and others.
The presentation concludes with reflections on the future development of the marvelous EURO family and some new trends in analytics that will be useful for decision support in solving new problems in this global, unpredictable world.
