Abstract
Operational decision making traditionally focuses on efficiency. By increasing efficiency, companies can reduce the number of routes, kms, working hours, and resources needed for operations, leading to lower operational costs and increased profitability.
In the last decade, there has been growing attention towards other types of KPIs, like the environmental impact of operations. In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal call to improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth, while tackling climate change. These SDGs put a different and much wider focus on operational decision making.
In this workshop, we will review some of these SDGs, present methodologies for including them in operational decision making, and discuss how we as an OR community can contribute to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.
