Abstract
The National Health Service (NHS) in England provides free-at-the-point-of-access healthcare to the population of England. Its budget of around £179bn is funded through general taxation.
NHS England is the body that leads and manages the NHS. It oversees the budget, planning, delivery and operations of the NHS in England. NHS England has a large Data & Analytics directorate in which operational research analysts and operational research techniques are well represented.
Dr Stephen Lorrimer is head of Analysis and Insight for Finance at NHS England. He has over thirty years' experience in the UK public sector, originally working on the physics modules of weather forecasts before moving into operational research in welfare benefits and then health. He is also one of the two Vice-Presidents of the OR Society.
In this session Stephen will illustrate the impact of operational research on NHS England’s decision making process, discussing a number of projects drawn from across the range of our work.
