Abstract

Addressing contemporary sustainability challenges requires decision-making processes that integrate diverse stakeholder values, ensure transparency, and facilitate conflict resolution. In this context, Social Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) has emerged as a crucial framework for designing and assessing projects and policies. Among SMCE methodologies, the SOCRATES method provides distinctive advancement for enhanced decision-making by visualizing stakeholder coalitions and fostering constructive dialogues. Within this research landscape, Evaluab, the evaluation laboratory of the Department of Architecture in Naples, Italy, is establishing itself as a leading hub for the SMCE development. Through research and education, Evaluab fosters an interdisciplinary evaluation approach in planning and design. This contribution focuses on the educational perspective of the SOCRATES applications carried out by Evaluab, demonstrating the method’s effectiveness in: (i) academic outputs, where SMCE is applied in master degree theses to assess alternative scenarios; (ii) educational settings, where students employ SOCRATES to select compromise solutions and manage co-design processes. By analyzing real-world applications carried out by Evaluab research team, this study highlights how SOCRATES is an evaluation method capable of orienting design, promoting participatory processes and advancing the integration of multi-criteria and multi-group assessments in urban and territorial planni
