Abstract
EURO 1995 in Jerusalem was an unforgettable conference. We celebrated the 20th anniversary of EURO at that time. Zilla Sinuany-Stern was the Chair of the Organizing Committee, and Roman Słowiński was the Head of the Program Committee. The leading theme of the conference was "OR: Towards Intelligent Decision Support". Plenary sessions were delivered by several leading OR scholars, including Zilla’s friend Robert J. Aumann from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, who later received the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2005 for his work in game theory. Another notable speaker and Zilla’s friend was William W. Cooper, co-author - together with Professors Charnes and Rhodes - of the most cited article in OR journals, on DEA, published in 1978 in EJOR. Among the invited speakers was also Roman’s friend, Zdzisław Pawlak from the Polish Academy of Sciences, the founder of rough set theory. Many other well-known and excellent speakers participated in EURO 1995. For the first time in the history of EURO conferences, the Program Committee invited the EURO Working Groups to organize invited sessions and deliver semi-plenary talks through their representatives. Before the conference, we printed a book in Poland featuring 20 plenary and semi-plenary lectures, which was distributed to all participants at the Jerusalem conference. Beyond the outstanding scientific program, the social program was exceptional. We had excursions to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. The Mayor of Jerusalem hosted us at the David Tower, offering warm greetings. A light and sound show about the history of Jerusalem was also presented. A gala dinner celebrating the 20th anniversary of EURO was held at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Just beforehand, the Shrine of the Book was specially opened for us, displaying the famous Dead Sea Scrolls, accompanied by a brief lecture on the exhibits. The Hebrew University hosted the conference at its Givat Ram campus. We worked with the event management company Ortra, Ltd.
