Abstract

Students are often involved quite heavily in joint work between OR practitioners and academic institutions, in a way that not only helps to enhance their learning experience but also, more importantly to our community of practitioners, so that these collaborations may be more effective and impactful to the so-called ‘real world’. Schools and Departments of Operational Research, Management Science, and Decision/Business/Data Analytics have traditionally included their students in external engagement initiatives. The talks in this session will share with the audience some recent examples of knowledge and impact co-creation involving students and institutions across Europe. If you are an OR practitioner and have never worked with universities, this session will give you reasons to try and engage more with them, for your benefit. If you already work with academia, the session may still provide you with a few ideas for revitalizing your existing partnerships!

The session will start with the following three short talks (10 minutes each):

1. A decade of research collaboration in e-commerce: opportunities, challenges, and lessons learned. Speaker: Dr Leendert Kok, Chief Science Architect at ORTEC

2. Turning Theory into Impact: Navigating Industry Partnerships in OR/IE. Speaker: Dr Enis Kayis, Associate Professor at Ozyegin University

3. Involving Students in Effective Knowledge and Impact Co-creation for the UK Airport Industry. Speakers: Gavin Sillitto, Transformation Programme Lead at London Gatwick; Dr Maurizio Tomasella, Reader (Associate Professor) at University of Edinburgh Business School

Following the short talks will be a panel discussion involving the audience.
