Abstract
Based on an extensive literature review, we found that in many hospitals the surgery activities in an outpatient setting could be planned and scheduled quite effectively, whereas it would be challenging to plan OR capacity in the more uncertain and complex inpatient settings. In this presentation, we therefore propose a promising and robust variation on the multistage scheduling process of ORs and surgeries in the inpatient operating theater. It consists of partitioning elective surgeries into two homogeneous groups, i.e., the more predictable surgeries (MPS) group and the less predictable surgeries (LPS) group, and then the MPS surgeries are scheduled in separate ORs from the LPS and the emergency surgeries. Using Markov decision process (MDP), linear programming (LP) and simulation models, we comprehensively investigate whether, how and where such a partitioning can be beneficial regarding a variety of performance measures. The analysis is performed for both a real university hospital and a stylized model. Important findings and insights are deduced from this analysis.
