Abstract

Simulation imitates a real-world system for analyzing and finding solutions to different kinds of problems, which are generally difficult to solve analytically. Simulation has been applied extensively in Operation Research (OR) or Operation Management (OM) fields such as manufacturing, project management, defense, healthcare, supply chain, and network. Verification and validation (V&V) ensure these models are accurate and reliable. Verification checks if the conceptual model is correctly coded, while validation assesses its accuracy in representing the actual system.
This study conducts a systematic literature review on V&V in simulation models, aiming to:
1. Assess the current state of V&V in business and manufacturing.
2. Identify key V&V techniques.
3. Highlight research gaps.
We followed a four-step approach:
1. Collected 17,224 research articles from Scopus and Web of Science, filtering down to 300 relevant studies.
2. Used Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) to identify prominent research themes.
3. Reviewed methodological papers on V&V techniques, noting a stronger focus on validation.
4. Identified future research directions.
This study presents the first systematic review of V&V in business simulation models, identifying nine key themes, visualizing bibliographic clusters, and highlighting research gaps for future study.
