Abstract

Urban quality is a multifaceted concept that has been explored by different disciplines in both theoretical and practical ways. The definition given by the urban design priorities the physical setting of the built environment, its morphological layout and the consideration of intangible and social values (Oppio et al. 2020). This definition highlights the hierarchical and multi-attribute nature of urban quality, which requires an assessment capable of considering these multiple aspects in a multi-stakeholder context. The present research proposes the use of Spatial Multicriteria Analysis (S-MCA) (Malczewski, 2006) to evaluate the urban quality of the northern part of the city of Turin (Italy). After a literature review, the evaluation problem is hierarchically structured in 4 criteria and 16 sub-criteria. The set of weights is assigned during a workshop involving a group of stakeholders, including the Turin City Councillor for Urban Planning, a representative of the citizens, the local public transport and the Environmental Agency. The analysis supports the definition of the city's public administration policies, particularly in the context of the implementation of the new municipal plan.
