Abstract

The introduction of foldable containers is anticipated to reduce the number of vehicles required for repositioning empty containers. However, when using foldable containers, folding time (FT) is necessary in addition to waiting time (WT) until the same number of containers as the stacking tier accumulates. These factors could potentially decrease the operational efficiency of vehicles and containers. Therefore, this study focuses on the relationship between FT, WT, and the operational status of an inland depot, employing a stochastic simulation approach to verify how efficiently foldable containers can facilitate empty container repositioning by vehicles. The results of numerical experiments reveal that the variation in FT duration significantly impacts the economic viability of foldable containers.
