Abstract

Approximately 10% of the global population lacks access to electricity, with a significant portion residing in rural areas, underscoring the importance of rural electrification efforts. In this study, we focus on determining the optimal technology choice and network design for rural electrification at macro level. To this end, we propose a series of MILP models that minimize costs by strategically allocating settlements to off-grid, grid, or mini-grid options. Furthermore, we introduce multi-stage versions of these models to guide optimal investment decisions over time, addressing the practical challenge of roll-out electrification plans. Through real-life and synthetic instances, we demonstrate the potential cost advantages of our proposed enhancements.
