The International Transactions in Operational Research (ITOR), the flagship journal published by the International Federation of Operational Research Societies, will publish a special issue dedicated to Artificial Intelligence, Inverse Problems, and Optimization.
This special issue aims to highlight recent advances at the intersection of artificial intelligence, inverse problems, and optimization, with an emphasis on both theoretical developments and impactful real-world applications. The rapid integration of machine learning with classical inverse modeling and optimization methodologies is reshaping how complex systems are analyzed, reconstructed, and controlled across scientific and engineering domains.
We invite original research articles, review papers, and perspectives that explore emerging methods, foundational theory, and practical implementations bridging these areas.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
• Learning-based and physics-informed approaches for inverse problems
• Data-driven and hybrid model–data methods
• Regularization techniques and their interpretation within modern learning frameworks
• Uncertainty quantification, stability, and robustness in inverse modeling
• Integration of deep learning with classical variational, probabilistic, and Bayesian formulations
• Optimization methods for large-scale and nonconvex problems arising in:
◦ Inverse modeling
◦ Machine learning
◦ Scientific computing
• Stochastic, distributed, and accelerated optimization algorithms
• Theoretical analysis of convergence, generalization, and stability
• Computational efficiency and scalability in high-dimensional settings
Submissions addressing applications are particularly welcome, including but not limited to:
• Imaging and signal processing
• Computational physics and scientific computing
• Engineering systems and control
• Economics and data-driven modeling
• Physical and environmental sciences
• Biomedical and medical imaging
• Geosciences and remote sensing
In this respect, we would like to stress that ITOR is an Operations Research journal. Therefore, weexpect submissions to contribute to the field of Operations Research and not to focus exclusively on Artificial Intelligence.
The submission deadline is February 28, 2027. The submission site will open on July 1, 2026.
All papers submitted to this special issue will undergo the standard peer review procedures established by ITOR. Submitted papers must be original, unpublished, and not currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. All submissions must fit within the journal’s domain statement and will be judged for their relevance to the special issue’s scope, innovativeness, and the extent of theoretical and practical research contribution. Contributions should be prepared according to the instructions to authors, available at the journal homepage on https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/ page/journal/14753995/homepage/forauthors.html.
Authors should submit and upload their contributions using the submission site https://wiley. atyponrex.com/journal/ITOR, indicating in their cover letter that the paper is intended for this special issue. Other inquiries should be sent directly to the guest editor in charge of this issue: Prof. Davide La Torre, email: davide.latorre@skema.edu
