Applications are now open for one (1) FAPESP postdoctoral fellowship in the Computer Science Division of the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), for the project "Efficient solutions to the storage location assignment problem in e-commerce".
The objective of the project is to study and propose models and solution methods for a combinatorial optimization problem known as the Storage Location Assignment Problem (SLAP), which is a variant of the bin packing problem. This problem can be approached with single or multiple objectives, and due to its large-scale applications, heuristic methods will be developed.
The selected candidates will work at the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (ITA), located in São José dos Campos, SP, Brazil, under the supervision of Professor Mariá C. V. Nascimento.
The scholarship offers a monthly payment of approximately US$2,250.00. In addition, a relocation allowance is provided as follows:
For relocations of 50 km or more and less than 350 km:
– An additional monthly scholarship payment.
For relocations of 350 km or more:
– An additional monthly scholarship payment; and
– Coverage of ground and/or economy-class air transportation expenses for the fellow, spouse, and dependents.
There is the possibility of taking part of the project abroad, upon request for a Research Internship Abroad Grant (RIA). All grants include technical reserve funds for research. For more details, see the FAPESP page https://fapesp.br/en/postdoc.
REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must have some experience with programming languages, preferably C, C++, or Python, as well as knowledge in combinatorial optimization. Strong academic performance during undergraduate and/or graduate studies is expected, with no course failures. Full-time dedication to the fellowship is required. The PhD degree must be in areas related to combinatorial optimization or operations research and must have been obtained no more than 7 years ago.
The selection will be based on the candidates' curriculum and their potential to contribute to this project, as well as to the associated FAPESP Thematic Project: “Cutting, packing, lot sizing, production scheduling, routing, location problems and their integration in industrial and logistics contexts.”Applicants must submit their application by email no later than January 5, 2026.
The application must include the following documents:
A curriculum vitae, including a list of publications and relevant previous experience;
Complete academic records (academic transcript);
A cover letter;
One letter of recommendation.
All application materials should be sent to Prof. Mariá C. V. Nascimento at maria.nascimento@gp.ita.br, with the subject line “Bolsa PD/FAPESP – ITA”.
For any questions, please contact Prof. Mariá C. V. Nascimento at the same email address.
