| Purpose and history | The main purpose of the EWG-DSS - EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems is to establish a platform for encouraging state-of-the-art high quality research and collaboration work within the DSS community. Other aims of the EWG-DSS are to: • Encourage the exchange of information among practitioners, end-users, and researchers in the area of Decision Systems. • Enforce the networking among the DSS communities available and facilitate activities that are essential for the start-up of international cooperation research and projects. • Facilitate professional academic and industrial opportunities for its members. • Favour the development of innovative models, methods and tools in the field Decision Support and related areas. • Actively promote the interest on Decision Systems in the scientific community by organizing dedicated workshops, seminars, mini-conferences and conference streams in major conferences, as well as editing special and contributed issues in relevant scientific journals. The EURO Working Group on Decision Support Systems (EWG-DSS) was founded during a memorable EURO Summer Institute on DSS that took place at Madeira, Portugal, in May 1989. This Summer Institute was organised by Jean-Pierre Brans and José Paixão. It counted with the participation of 24 young researchers of 16 different nationalities. Most of them still continue nowadays to pursue their goals, working actively in their research areas. The number of EWG-DSS members has substantially grown along the years with members coming from various different nationalities. There has also been established quiet a few well-qualified research co-operations within the group members, which have generated valuable contributions to the DSS field in journal publications. Since its creation, the EWG-DSS has held annual Meetings in various European countries, and has taken active part in the EURO Conferences on decision-making related subjects. Since 2007 the EWG-DSS has been managed by a Coordination Board. One of the aims of this coordination board is to better promote joint-work among the group members and to encourage more participation of the whole group in DSS related projects and events. In the period of June 2007 to January 2011 the EWG-DSS Coordination Board was composed by: Pascale Zaraté, Fatima Dargam and Rita Ribeiro. Since the beginning of 2011, the EWG-DSS Managing Board has doubled in number of members. Besides the old coordinators, now we count with the assistance of 3 new Board Members to better administrate the activities of the group, as well as to bring new ideas to it. Current EWG-DSS Coordination Board: PascaleZaraté(Coordinator) FátimaDargam (Coordinator) Rita Ribeiro (Board Chair) Jorge Hernández (Board Assistant) Boris Delibasic (Board Assistant) Shaofeng Liu (Board Assistant) History & Meetings: The group was created in Madeira (Portugal) following the Euro Summer Institute on DSS, in May 1989. Researchers involved in this group meet each year in different countries. The first meeting was held in Fontainebleau (France); the second in Bruges (Belgium); then in Hungary and then in Sintra (Portugal). The group migrated to a cold country and the fifth meeting was organised in Turku (Finland) and then came back to a warm land for the sixth meeting in Samos (Greece). The seventh meeting was held in Ispra (Italy); then in Bruges again and then, our chairman Tawfik Jelassi organised the ninth meeting in Granada (Spain). For the tenth birthday the group came back to Turku. In 2000 the meeting was held in Toulouse (France) and in 2001 we met in Caiscas (Portugal). For 2002, the meeting of the group consisted of the Euro Mini conference devoted to DSS, and was held in Brussels, Belgium. In 2003 the business meeting of the group was held during the HCP2003 Conference in Luxembourg and sessions were also organised during the Joint EURO/INFORMS Conference in Istanbul, Turkey. In 2004, the business meeting of the group was organised during the IFIP WG8.3 international conference on Decision Support Systems in Prato, Italy. In 2005, a joint workshop with the ECUBE group and the e-participation project was organised in Graz, Austria by Fatima Dargam. In 2006, a workshop of the group was organised by P. Zaraté and was held by the CIDMDS Conference, an IFIP 8.3 International Conference, London, June 28th - July 1st 2006. For this same year (2006) a complete stream (7 sessions) was organised by P. Zaraté during the EURO XXI Conference, Reykavik, Iceland 2-5 July 2006. For 2007 during the EURO XXII Conference organised in Prague, Czech Republic, July 8-11, 2007, A full stream on DSS and Decision Analysis has been organised by Fatima Dargam and Pascale Zaraté. In 2008, a joint working conference with the IFIP 8/TC8.3 group was organised in Toulouse, France, in July 1st-4th 2008 by P. Zaraté. This conference attracted 90 participants coming from 24 countries. 69 papers has been submitted and 34 was accpeted as full papers, 9 as short papers and 14 as posters. An award of the best poster has been assigned to J. Hernandez coming from Valencia, Spain for the poster entitled: “A collaborative decision-making model to support the reverse logistic process in the supply chain. An application of the GRAI methodology to the automobile sector.” In 2009, during the EURO XXIV Conference organised in Bonn, Germany from July 5 to 8 2009, a full stream has jointly been organised by Fatima Dargam and Pascale Zaraté.In 2010, the EWG-DSS annual meeting took place in Lisbon, during the EURO XXIV – International European Conference on Operational Research. Basically, the meeting was part of the DSS Stream jointly been organised by Fatima Dargam, Rita Ribeiro and Pascale Zaraté. The Sessions of the DSS Streams were: "Models for Decision Making and Decision Analysis" & "Applications in Decision Making and Decision Analysis". In 2011, the EWG-DSS group organised two Workshops. The 1st Workshop of the group was the “EWG-DSS London 2011", which took place in Birbeck College, University of London, in London – UK, during the period of June 23rd to June 24th, 2011. The second Workshop was the EWG-DSS / DASIG Paris-2011 Joint-Workshop, that took place in Paris Dauphine University in France, in the period of November 30th to December 1st, 2011. The Paris-2011 Joint-Workshop was supported by EURO and by LAMSADE: a joint-laboratory of the University Paris-Dauphine and the CNRS. Research conducted in the EWG-DSS group has as its central theme: DSS: Decision Support Systems, as well as Decision Making Processes and Analysis. Some areas including Data-Mining, Data Warehouse, Knowledge Management, among others are also of relevance to some of the group members. Within the EWG-DSS meetings, discussions concerning currents research trends and the future of DSS always arise. Questions as for example: "How will DSS be in the next decade?", "How is Decision Making influenced by the Internet Age?" often are asked. Some of these questions are answered by themselves as time goes by, with the projects that are developed in the area and presented in the DSS Streams of the major IT and OR Conferences. Through those projects' presentations and publications we become aware of the current tendencies in the Decision Making area. And through our "engagement" in developing and enhancing new strategies for Decision Support Systems, we keep the area alive and healthy and at the same time, we indirectly guide its way to a new DSS generation.
