EURO Distinguished Service Medal guidelines
Policy
The EURO Distinguished Service Medal is awarded for recognition of distinguished service to the Association of European OR Societies (EURO) and to the profession of OR. The award is officially bestowed in conjunction with a EURO Conference, if there is a suitable candidate.
Eligibility
This award is given to an individual who has served the European OR community and the profession effectively for many years. Moreover, no currently active officer of EURO (Executive Committee member, EURO Distinguished Service Medal jury member, Organising and Programme Committees Chairpersons of the conference where the EURO Distinguished Service Medal will be awarded) is eligible.
Award
The laureates receive a "medal", a diploma and are invited to all future EURO Conferences without payment of the registration fees.
Selection jury
The selection jury consists of five members who themselves have distinguished records of long service to EURO and the profession of OR. The jury making process starts with a core of three members who serve normally a three prizes period, staggered so that one member is added at each prize. The new member is nominated by the members of the old jury core subject to approval of the EURO Executive Committee and EURO Council. The chairperson is normally the member who is in the final year of service. The EURO EC then selects additionally two members serving only for the current prize in question. These are to be approved by the EURO Council.
The jury members must be members of one of the EURO member societies but not necessarily previous EURO Distinguished Service Medallist.
Selection process
In the year prior to each EURO Conference, the EURO Distinguished Service Medal jury should seek suggestions for and advice on potential prize recipients from a broad selection. This might include the EURO member national societies Presidents, the previous EURO Distinguished Service Medal laureates and jury chairs, the EURO Working groups Coordinators...The nominations for possible award recipients should be sent to the EDSM jury by the deadline with if possible, a CV or an equivalent document. Nominations must be made in confidence (i.e. the nominee should not be informed).
The jury evaluates the proposed candidates essentially on basis of their distinguished services to EURO and to the profession of OR. The selection jury is authorized to choose the award laureate (only one award may be made) without review or approval of the selection by the EURO Executive Committee and EURO Council. The decision of the jury is publicly announced at the next EURO Conference. Following a presentation of the competition by the chair of the jury, the laureate receives the EURO Distinguished Service Medal and a diploma.
