EURO Doctoral Dissertation Award
Policy
If there is a suitable recipient, the prize is awarded by each EURO conference to a early stage scientist on the basis of a doctoral dissertation in any area of OR. Early stage scientists are either PhD students or scientists having less than two years research experience since completing a PhD.
Eligibility
The entries will consist of doctoral dissertations that were completed after the competition deadline of the previous EURO Doctoral Dissertation Award. The dissertation must have been defended at an European University and the author must be a member of an EURO member society. To be considered, a dissertation must be nominated by the thesis supervisor, who must submit the following items, as far as possible in electronic version:
- Dissertation.
- Extended abstract (3 to 5 pages) in English.
- If the thesis was not written
in English the nomination must include a paper in English (10 to
max. 30 pages) describing the core ideas of the thesis that has been
submitted for publication in an international journal or a prestigious
conference.
- Nomination letters (or reports) from two referees selected by the
dissertation supervisor, supporting the submission and stating their
assessment of why the thesis should win the award.
These items have to be sent to the chairman of the jury not later than
6 months before the next EURO K conference. No
nomination will be considered without these 4 items.
Award
The prize is endowed by 1.000 € for the final winner and includes a certificate.
The 3 finalists are granted the early registration fee at the EURO K conference at which
they participate as such. EURO will also contribute to their travel and journey expenses.
Selection jury
The selection jury consists of five members of recognized stature in the OR community. The jury making process starts with a core of three members who serve normally a three prizes period, staggered so that one member is added at each prize. The new member is nominated by the members of the old jury core subject to approval of the EURO Executive Committee and EURO Council. The chairperson is normally the member who is in the final year of service. The EURO EC then selects additionally two members serving only for the current prize in question. These are to be approved by the EURO Council. Care should be taken to make sure that the selection committee is representative of the various areas of operational research. In particular, it is important that no two or more members come from the same major area in the OR. The jury members must be members of one of the EURO member societies.
If any member of the award jury has a past or current relationship with a nominee that might influence the selection process for reasons other than the merits of the case relative to the award, it is the responsibility of each jury member to bring to the attention of the jury chair such a conflict of interest. The jury chair should propose a response that ensures that the final decision of the jury is exempt from any apparent conflict.
Selection process
In the 1.5 year prior to each EURO conference the EURO Doctoral Dissertation Award jury will place a call for nominations on the EURO Web site. EURO Office will hand the information over to the EURO member societies and to the EURO Working Groups. Four months prior to the EURO conference the jury identifies 3 finalists who are invited to present their work during the EURO conference. After the presentation at the EURO conference, the jury chooses the final winner (only one award may be made).
