Purpose and history

EUROPT was established at the second day of the second IPM Workshop (IPM-2000), organized just before the EURO-XVII meeting in Budapest, July 2000. IPM-2000 was the first workshop of EUROPT. There were 58 founding members who joined EUROPT during EURO-XVII conference. In Autumn 2009, EUROPT's number of members traversed almost 1100!

Purpose:

  • to disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge and to support research in continuous optimization,

  • to contribute to the education of young optimization researchers and students (organizing EURO Summer and Winter Institutes, and by announcing Ph.D. Programs etc.),

  • to assist in gathering the continuous optimization community in Europe organized under the umbrella of EURO,

  • to build and maintain links with sister special interest groups inside and outside EURO. Inside EURO, the working groups and chapters on Combinatorial Optimization (ECCO), on Complex Societal Problems, on Experimental Economy (E-CUBE), on Financial Modelling, on Fuzzy Sets (EUROFUSE), on Metaheuristics (EU/ME) and on Multicriteria Decision Aiding (MCDA) are among our closest sisters. In 2006, two new EURO Working Groups were founded by the iniative of EUROPT: one on OR in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics and Medicine (EURO WG CBBM), and the other one on OR for Development (EURO WG ORD). Outside EURO, we have good contacts and collaborations with optimization groups of SIAM, IFORS, INFORMS, of ALIO, APOR and POP. Furthermore, we are going on

  • to support the foundation of new EURO working groups,

  • to establish regular information channels and regular meetings,

  • to build links to users of continuous optimization methodology,

  • to involve industrial organizations and users of optimization in the activities listed above,

  • to initiate interdisciplinary research with colleagues from science, engineering and economy, with continuous optimization being a key technology,

  • to support preparation, refereeing and editing of publications,

  • vivid exchange between scientific experience and enthusiasm of the youth,

  • to encouragement of building up a common and developing Europe, and

  • to deepen of peace and friendship in Europe and in the world.

In 2009, there have been great events to which EUROPT contributed, but EUROPT also actively supported smaller events and meetings prepared by its sister EURO working groups.

In fact, in 2009, we gave a strong contribution to

  • EURO XXIII 2009 – 23rd European Conference on Operational Research, Bonn, Germany, July 5-8, 2009 (http://www.euro-2009.de/), for this very important event, a sensational number of streams could be prepared and abstracts gathered, many ones of them by EUROPT, its friends and members, again. At this event, one of our EUROPT’s initiators and members from the beginning, Prof. Dr. Jakob Krarup, received the EURO Distinguished Service Award.

As our core event of 2009 we celebrated

  • 7th EUROPT Workshop “Advances in Continuous Optimization”, Remagen (near Bonn), Germany, July 3-4, 2009;
(http://www.rheinahrcampus.de/Home.europt2009.0.html). There, we also appointed and honoured our EUROPT Fellow 2009: Prof. Dr. Adil Bagirov!

    Furthermore, we had

  • Workshop on Game Theory, Ankara, Turkey, January 30, 2009

The latter two events as satellites of EURO 2009, a status which also the following one had:

  • 4th Summer School “Achievements and Applications of Contemporay Mathematics, Informatics and Physics” (AACIMP-2009), Kiev, Ukraine, August 5-16, 2009 (http://www.summerschool.ssa.org.ua/); moreover,

Moreover, it has been a great honour that EURO Executive Committee accepted two more Mini EURO Conferences with the involvement of EUROPT:

  • 5th International Vilnius Conference and EURO-Mini Conference "Knowledge-Based Technologies and OR Methodologies for Strategic Decisions of Sustainable Development" (KORSD-2009), September 30 - October 3, 2009, Vilnius
    (http://www.mii.lt/korsd-2009).

In 2010, our conference season started very early. Actually, we already celebrated

  • 3rd Global Conference on Power and Optimization, PCO2010, Gold Coast, Australia, February 2-4, 2010 (http://www.engedu2.net).

    Finally, we spent care about

  • EUROPT Homepage and
  • EUROPT E-Mails and E-Newletter, sent by e-mails,
  • our help for other EURO Working Groups and their activities, with
  • integration of further research areas in EUROPT,
  • supporting EURO in various activities, award and selection processes,
  • supporting EJOR and further journals related to EURO’s member societies, and
  • serving the collaboration and friendship between national OR Societies of EURO; so,

    we went on supporting the

  • collaboration (official partnership) between ORST (Turkish OR Society) and GOR (German OR Society; GOR Representative in Turkey: Prof. Gerhard-Wilhelm Weber),

    and also the seminar series

  • “Seminar on (Financial Mathematics and)Computational Biology, Medicine, Environment and Development”(weekly seminar), METU, Ankara
