in memoriam
Death of Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich 1956-2009
Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich
Ukrainian Academy of Foreign Trade,
Department of Systems Analysis
Kiev, Ukraine
Chair of Ukraine Research Society on Societal Complexity
Member of the International Research Society on Societal Complexity
We are deeply shocked by the sudden death of our beloved friend and well esteemed colleague Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich. Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich died at the age of 53 last December due to an accident in his home town Kiev in Ukraine.
For more than ten years Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich was an active member of our International Research Society on Societal Complexity. Together with his wife Prof. dr. Ludmilla Koshila he was chair of the Ukraine Research Society on Societal Complexity.
In his field of Systems Analysis he dared to take the challenges of entering new ways in research. Together with his wife Prof. dr. Ludmilla Koshila Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich combined the knowledge of fuzzy set theory, hierarchy analysis and cybernetics with that of the methodology of Societal Complexity, specific the Compram methodology, to find new scientific approaches for handling real life problems, such as that of effects of the Tsjernobyl disaster to make strategic decisions concerning the periphery of suburban area.
Prof. Dr. Mikhail Mikhalevich was outstanding as a researcher and with his death science lost one of its pioneer in science. He was a very enthusiastic researcher dedicating his life to science.
Mikhail was an frequent contributor of the Euro conferences, every year attending the Euro conferences with his wife and scientific partner Ludmilla. We have very good memories of his lectures and his contribution to the discussion.
He became a warm and good friend of all of us. Talking with us during lunches, dinners, and at parties and meetings of our research group. We had a good time together.
Mikhail is taken from us in the middle of his scientific life. We are convinced that we speak on behalf of all who knew him that we will miss not only a good scientist but an interesting, warm and good friend.
We wish his wife Prof dr. Ludmilla Koshila all the strength and courage to go on.
Prof dr. Ludmilla Koshila indicated that she continues the scientific chairs she and her husband had in the Ukraine, so she will continue the chair of the Ukraine Research Society on Methodology of Societal Complexity. Although these chairs will be in good hands with her, she will be lonesome performing these tasks.
Ludmilla, we wish you all the courage to go on living without your dear husband, scientific partner and friend Mikhail.
Our only comfort is that in Ludmilla the memory of Mikhail will stay alive. Our thoughts go to Ludmilla whom we wish all the courage to continue a life without her beloved husband.
Mikhail we will miss you.

The Euro Working Group Complex Societal Problems is an interdisciplinary research group, and has 584 members coming from many disciplines. |
Purpose and history
What are complex societal problems?
Complex societal problems deal with, for example, those in Europe concerning the recent difficulties in the farming industry with Mad-Cow and the Foot-and-Mouth disease, and those in the area of transportation. Worldwide problems include in the area of healthcare, such as Malaria and HIV/AIDS, flu-pandemic, Q-fever and the Water problems (too less, too much and not clean) and economy, credit crisis and sustainable development.
Complex societal problems are unstructured, dynamic and constantly changing. Also, they have a great impact on society on macro, meso as well as on micro level. Sometimes they are local problems; mostly they are regional or even worldwide problems.
Complex societal problems can be found in all countries of the world. It is often uncertain what impact the problem has on society, what the goals and interests of the stakeholders are, and what will be the outcome of the problem. There are no easy, simple answers for these problems. Solutions, if there are any, can only be found with great effort and are often only temporary solutions. Handling complex societal problems needs a special approach. An interdisciplinary approach for tackling these has become essential for our society, and a challenge for the human sciences.
Complex societal problems are interdisciplinary: they include aspects that are subject of study in several scientific disciplines. Handling such problems involves knowledge, power and emotion. The content knowledge comes from content experts, a doctor, or hospital manager or a player in this field. The process knowledge comes from facilitators. These are scientists or practitioners working in this field of complex societal problems. These scientists and practitioners have backgrounds in different scientific disciplines, and use methods derived from their original field combined with methods specially created for the field of handling societal problems. Methods and insights that are used derive from the fields of medicine, law, economics, societal sciences, mathematics, computer sciences, technology, engineering sciences, chaos theory, and operational research.

Prof. dr. G.Weber
announcement: Professor Dr. Ken C. Bowen, R.I.P. March 2007
On behalf of the Euro Operation Research Society, the Management Science Society of Ireland, and the International Research Society on Methodology of Societal Complexity we are very sad to announce that Prof. Dr Ken Bowen past away last Friday 16th March 2007 aged 87. He died suddenly after going into his house from where he was working with his wife Barbara in his garden in his lovely home in Guilford.
Prof. Dr Ken Bowen was a good and enthusiastic scientist. He is an example for all of us of how a real scientist should be: good and thorough research on his own and in cooperation with others, stimulating new comers and youngsters in the field, open to new ideas, yet critical where needed and always giving positive and supporting good ideas. He was always willing to reflect different points of view and communicating carefully. Many young and new coming scientists benefited from his supportive comments and broad knowledge. Bringing people together from quite different fields was only one of his strengths. Being in the field of Operational Research for so many years he was acquainted with many of us, had a good overview of what was going on and became a good friend of many of us. Prof. Dr Ken Bowen worked until the last day of his long life on science.
Working in science for so many years Prof. Dr Ken Bowen became a well-known and very respected scientist in the field, whose knowledge greatly exceeded the boundaries of his own field.
Having finished his dissertation after a life long career in the English Navy, having seen much of the world, he dedicated the last 25 years of his life to science, emphasizing that complex societal problems can be better handled in a scientific and practical way, instead of starting a war over it. In this regard one of his last publications is very interesting to read see: Volume 8 Global Safety and Terrorism http://www.geocities.com/doriendetombe/detombeMMvolmue8terrorism.html
For us Ken Bowen was an example of a great scientist. He started as a mathematician and, over the years, gravitated towards broader areas to do with problem-formulation, conflict resolution, strategy and decision structures. We had the opportunity to work close together with him and are grateful to have getting this chance. He supported our work again and again and we enjoyed his enthusiastic discussions with us. We are sure this can be said by many of us. We will miss Ken, as a scientist, but most of all as a human being, a good friend, a good companion. We know that being able to do science on such an old age, and being able to go to conferences and support youngsters gave Ken a lot of pleasure. Ken and his lovely wife Barbara were also very hospital and invited many of us in their wonderful home in the top of the hill in Guilford, were we enjoyed many discussions on science, gardening, raising children, politics, ceremonies and poetry while listening to lovely music and visiting museums.
Ken Bowen was a great man, a great personality, and an independent thinker.
We like to give our sincere condolences to his lovely wife Barbara, their children and grandchildren who have lost a husband, father and grandfather.
Dear Ken, thanks that we had to change to know you. We will miss you and Barbara at our conferences. We will not forget you and stay in contact with Barbara.

Agenda 2002
In the year 2002, the Euro Working Group on Complex Societal Problems organized six international meetings. All meetings were organized together with the Dutch NOSMO research group on Complex Societal Problems and the West-Euro group on Complex Societal Problems. These meetings took place in Amsterdam (3 times), Maastricht (The Netherlands), Brussels (Belgium) and Edinburgh, UK. At the meetings, individual research was discussed by presenting papers, and cooperation of the members of the research group was discussed, which resulted in an international and methodological comparison on the subject of "The Complexity of Large Cities". The Brussels meeting was organized in cooperation with the Mini Euro conference of Prof. dr. Jean Pierre Brans, and the meeting in Edinburgh was organized within the IFORS conference. A special booklet was published with the abstracts of the lectures on the topic of Complex Societal Problems in Edinbrugh (see below).

The main theme of research is 2002 is a continuation of the research started in 2001. The theme is "How to handle the complex problems in large cities". In this research, the focus is on the interaction of different aspects, such as economic, urban planning, education, and healthcare to one large problem. Three subgroups of the West-Euro research group are focussing with different methods on three different cities: Brussels, Adaptive Control Methodology (Brans); Maastricht Integrative City Planning (ICIS); and Amsterdam Compram method (DeTombe) in a comparison of methods.

ISSN- 0928-3137
The Journal deals with the question how complex real-life problems can be analyzed and handled with scientific methods and models. Because such problems most of the time cannot be handled by one discipline, the journal is interdisciplinary. Contributions may come from the social and natural sciences that practice interdisciplinary research of complex problems. In the past articles are published with topics as "Policy making for complex problems", "Participative Model building in Healthcare", "Complex System Theory for Analysis of Locomotion", "Non Linear Models for Economy", "From Information to Communication", "Logistic Modeling for Complex Situations", "Computer Simulation of Chaos and Order", "Evaluation of Future Predictions".
The publication of the International Scientific Journal of Methods and Models of Complexity will be two times a year. Two referees will review submitted articles, and on their advice the editors will decide about the publication. From time to time a special edition on a theme will be published.

Special on Chaos Theory
The June 2002 issue of the ‘International Scientific Journal of Methods and Models of Complexity’ is a special issue on Chaos Theory, more specific Chaos Theory applied to the Social Sciences. Although introduced already in the early nineties in the Social Sciences (Dijkum, van & DeTombe, 1992), the ideas of Chaos Theory have been scarcely applied up to now. Right from the start the ideas of Chaos Theory were creatively applied to all kinds of situations. Some scientists applied thoroughly thought over concepts to real life problems, some scientist and practitioners applied it as free creative ideas, which might bring up new views towards real life problems. The way Chaos Theory is applied in the Social Sciences still shows that the ideas of Chaos Theory are not yet clearly crystallized in this field. Chaos Theory still functions in the Social Sciences as a container theory from which each scientist can use the ideas and concepts that suits her or him. This is shown by the fact that the different words point to the same concepts and the same words point to different concepts. Practitioners tend to popularize the ideas of the Chaos Theory in a way often not approved by theoretical scientist.
Interdisciplinary integration of ideas and theories has been shown to be a fruitful way of extending the knowledge of a discipline. Modelling Complexity, including the complexity of real life problems, is difficult and need all effort and help that science can offer. Not only by applying the disciplinary knowledge but also by applying interdisciplinary knowledge (DeTombe, Dorien J. & Cor van Dijkum, 1996; DeTombe, 2001).
The latter providing a good extension of now-a days scientific knowledge, however, only if applied in the right way.
Using the ideas of Chaos Theory applied to the Social Sciences in handling real life complex problems is a fruitful way in trying to extend the knowledge of the world. Using theoretical ideas from another field of science can be very fruitful and functions as an eye opener. It really can bring disciplinary knowledge a step further. However, this should be done carefully taken into consideration all the consequences of the use of the theory, avoiding misconceptions and confusion. In this way the application of the ideas of the Chaos Theory to the Social Sciences is still in its infancy.
In this special issue on Chaos Theory we publish three articles of scientists each with a different use of the ideas of Chaos Theory applied to real life problems.
Dr. Jorgen A. Jensen of the Danish University of Education, Denmark, and dr. Ole E. Rasmussen of the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, described in their article ‘Types of problem solving activity in a complex environment: Steps towards modeling by a cuspcatastrophe’ a thorough scientific research in which they use concepts of Chaos Theory for training students in Denmark with a simulation model for entrepreneur tasks. The students learn these complex tasks in a dynamic task environment. Jensen & Rasmussen use the concept of catastrophe theory, which describes bifurcation systems not yet moved into chaos. The focus of the article is on testing the simulation model for training.
Dr. Tomas Backström of the National Institute for Working Life and Dr Peter Ladan of Ericsson Telecom AB, both of Stockholm, Sweden extend in their theoretical article ‘Knowledge Matrix – a transformative organization’ the knowledge of applying the ideas of Chaos Theory to an other discipline in a scientific responsible way by discussing the question under which circumstances an organization can be an transformative organization. Based on the idea that complex adaptive systems prove that complex behavior is only possible at the edge of chaos, Backström & Ladan say that a organization can be a transformative organization when it is on the edge of chaos. However to be a fruitful transformation the organization must meet at least three conditions: first equilibrium between organization memory and the dynamical creative behavior of the members, second most members should go in the same direction and third managers should give room to these processes.
Backström & Ladan interviewed middle-managers of the organization studied in order to see whether this particular organization meet the conditions of a transformative organization. The organization studied not meet the conditions of a transformative organization.
Dr. Frans M. van Eijnaten & drs. Maarten C. van Galen both of the Technical University of Eindhoven, The Netherlands, have a creative view on Chaos Theory in their article: ‘The Dolphin Attractor. Dialogue for Emergent New order in a Dutch Manufacturing Firm’. They apply in an artistic way the ideas of Chaos Theory on management strategy. They describe in their article the results of workshops applying the ideas of Chaos Theory on the strategy of a Dutch manufacturing firm. In their article Eijnatten & Van Galen use metaphors of fishes. The strategy of the Carp: avoiding and compromising. The strategy of the Shark: win again any costs. The strategy of the Dolphin, win-win strategy. Eijnatten & Van Galen argue in favor of a win-win strategy calling this the Dolphin approach.
The editors of the Journal ISJ M&MC thank the reviewers for their advice to improve the articles.
