Abstract

Everyone has been aware of the existence of AI and its powerful capabilities at least since the publication of OpenAI's ChatGPT. But it is not only since then that AI has been playing an increasingly important role in the economy and therefore also in supply chains. There seems to be a huge number of different tools, each of which is suitable for a specific task within the supply chain. Be it in purchasing, in production or even in crisis management to support quick decisions. There are many proof-of-concepts that show the benefits these tools can bring to their tasks, as well as theoretical considerations in the literature. However, a closer look reveals that these considerations usually only apply to a single purpose or part of the supply chain. The overarching strategy of how, in what order and for which use cases AI tools should be deployed seems to be disregarded. Literature research and a recent survey of German, Austrian and Swiss logistics companies confirm this finding. The question therefore arises: What could a roadmap to AI for logistics look like? What could a general strategy for a sensible and sustainable entry into AI look like, especially for small and medium-sized companies? To this end, we are not only conducting a literature review, but also a survey of different regional companies. In our presentation, we will give deeper insights into our qualitative findings, first recommendations and an outlook on next steps.
