Abstract
There are many links between Design and OR, but although Design scholars often pay a nod to these links it is rarely recognised by OR researchers. In this talk we will look at the history of the two disciplines and how they intertwine and then focus on the links between OR and design thinking specifically. We will discuss what systems thinking is, and is not, and look at some of the tools that are similar to systems and soft OR approaches. We then go on to discuss how design thinking can help us to take a systems approach particularly when our standard tools are found wanting in a situation. This gives us alternative tools to both study and perform OR in systems.
