Abstract

This study examines the integration of hydrogen propulsion technology into rail transport, a sector constrained by fixed infrastructure. The strategic placement of hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) is crucial for advancing fuel cell technology in railways. To address the HRS location problem, this study introduces the Multi-Period Hydrogen Refueling Station Location Problem for Railways (MPHRSLPR) inspired by the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model which considers varying hydrogen demand, hydrogen availability, infrastructure costs, and operational constraints, and prices over multiple periods. This approach enables experimentation with diverse scenarios, aiding strategic decisions on deploying new technology at national and regional levels. A Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is developed to solve the MPHRSLPR, optimizing HRS placement at predefined locations over a 15–30-year horizon. The objective is to minimize total investment and operating costs while meeting regional hydrogen demand. The paper presents the problem definition, modeling approach, and MIP formulation, with an implementation based on exemplary instances from the Wielkopolska region in Poland.
