Abstract

This research addresses a strategic problem of a one-way business to consumer shared car system: optimizing inventory levels and dynamically relocating shared cars to balance demand and supply. It proposes a two-stage stochastic program, under the assumption that cars can be relocated using teleoperation. Next, it adapts the model to account for relocation constraints such as a finite number of staff and their routing using shared vans. Finally, to assess the suitability of strategic solutions at the operational level, this paper proposes a discrete-event simulation that mimics the operation of a one-way car sharing system. It explores the models and simulation on a use case of London to investigate the impact of staff and fleet size on key performance indices and draws useful managerial insights.
