Abstract

Most decision problems start with set of “given” alternatives and the scientific literature mainly focuses on the methods for choosing among them, whereas the process through which the alternatives are defined has been underestimated. The paper aims at exploring the topic of problem formulation and alternatives generation in real world decision problems, reflecting on different OR approaches. Grounding on the results of a pilot workshop where a problem of housing energy retrofitting was examined with 6 OR methods, namely 1) Value Focused Theory, 2) Strategic Choice Approach, 3) Participatory Systems Thinking 4) Decision Tree, and 5) C-K theory, the present study presents a recent advancement of the experimentation for a decision problem related to the reuse of a public abandoned building in Italy. This contribution will illustrate the configuration of a planned workshop with several stakeholders, with specific attention to the organization of the interaction between the experts and the client according to the abovementioned methods.
