Abstract

With the rise of e-commerce, crowdshipping has emerged as an efficient and sustainable last-mile delivery solution. However, its effectiveness depends on strategic parcel placement and crowdshippers' willingness to accept tasks, introducing uncertainties that impact system performance. This study presents an optimization framework for a multi-modal crowdshipping system, where parcel placement is optimized using a heuristic approach to enhance delivery performance and adaptability. The framework integrates multiple transport modes for crowdshippers, alongside professional delivery fleets. Data has been collected regarding the decision of travelers to act as crowd-shippers on which basis a multinomial logit (MNL) model is employed. The simulated crowdshippers' probabilistic task acceptance behavior allows for a behavior-driven allocation strategy. The objective is to reduce total system costs, including parcel placement, compensation incentives, and fleet operations. Tasks that remain unassigned are reassigned to a professional fleet, optimized using a vehicle routing problem (VRP) model. We report results from numerical experiments based on urban delivery data from Copenhagen and report the situation under which the crowd-sourced parcel delivery can be optimally operated.
