Abstract

The concept of smart cities has become increasingly popular in the last year. This paradigm allows managing several processes in the urban area thanks to the availability of data and information taken from the environment. We consider the case in which drones are demanded to monitor areas of interest and/or collect data from sensors. Drones can perform deliveries in the urban area. Monitoring areas of interest and performing the delivery process are two difficult problems, i.e., the covering tour problem and the travelling salesman problem with drone, respectively. In this work, we consider the combined problem of delivering items by using a truck equipped with a drone, wherein both the truck and the drone may perform deliveries. During the deliveries, the drone may deviate from the optimal routes, with respect to the delivery problem, to reach areas of interest. We propose a mixed integer formulation to represent the outlined framework. A computational analysis is carried out to evaluate the benefits of the combined problem with respect to the resolution of the two problems separately.
