Abstract

Proton therapy is a promising cancer treatment technique, known for its ability to deliver energy with precision while minimizing the dose absorbed by healthy tissues. However, uncertainty in the Bragg peak position can compromise treatment quality. To address this challenge, this study initially proposes an optimization model based on the minimax method, which minimizes the maximum dose in the tumor, ensuring better protection of critical organs and adequate tumor coverage. The model is validated using data from the TROTS database, with a focus on head and neck cancer cases, where structures such as the oral cavity, larynx, and brainstem are highly sensitive to radiation. Additionally, treatment robustness is explored by accounting for anatomical and patient positioning variations through multi-objective optimization, using goal programming as a strategy to enhance proton therapy. The results demonstrate more robust and safer treatment plans, contributing to the effectiveness of proton therapy in clinical practice.
