Abstract
Recent years have seen an increased interest in the application of multi-criteria analysis (MCA) in supporting complex and conflicting problems, such as sustainable land use change. We present a case study in the city of Salerno (Italy), where the successful and unsuccessful factors of adaptive reuse of historical buildings were explored through the application of the Dominance-based Rough Set Approach (DRSA). The implementation of this approach was conducted with a group of stakeholders and encountered several challenges, including a lack of familiarity with multi-criteria analysis among participants, the cognitive effort required to specify preference parameters, limited data, redundant information, and the integration of different disciplines. The main lessons learned from this application will be discussed, and critical insights on the application of multi-criteria decision-making methods will be provided to improve the quality of public decisions.
