Abstract
We discuss job assignment for persons with disabilities, as related to a case study pertaining the Internships project within the Citizen Services in the Municipality of Montevideo, Uruguay.
Labor inclusion of persons with disabilities depends on adapting physical spaces, improving communications, and the access to information and to technological tools needed to perform the task, as well as having enough flexibility to reinterpret the tasks and to generate an environment of respect and continuous learning for all parts involved.
During this project, we worked together with the Disabilities Secretary of the Municipality of Montevideo, to perform a job assignment for a group of interns with disabilities, taking into account their preferences. The assignment task was modeled using mathematical programming, including the definition of different alternative objective functions. The model included a number of hard constraints on the match between persons and jobs, as well as some desirable aspects, and can be extended to other scenarios.
The results for the mathematical programming models were compared against the manual assignment, showing better results, improving the satisfaction of the interns as well as the fit of the assignment (measured as the fit of the persons assigned to the needs defined for each job). Exploring different objective functions also allows to put into evidence the compromises between the different stakeholders, and supports decision making
