Abstract
The maritime sector is transforming to align with the decarbonization targets outlined in the Paris Agreement and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2023 strategy to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions from ships by or around 2050. Green shipping corridors (GSCs) have emerged as key enablers in this transition, providing structured pathways for deploying zero-emission maritime routes. However, despite the increasing focus on GSCs, a comprehensive and systematic assessment remains underdeveloped. This study reviews existing literature about GSCs to identify the prevailing methodologies and highlight gaps in current research. Employing a systematic literature review approach, the findings from 53 peer-reviewed articles and government publications published between 2019 and 2024 are synthesized. The study examines the evolution of the GSC concept and analyzes the strategic priorities outlined. Also, it reviews assessment methods and frameworks applied to GSCs across different stages, from pre-feasibility studies to impact assessments. The insights provide a foundational step toward implementing an assessment methodology and inform researchers and industry stakeholders to develop evidence-based strategies to advance GSCs.
