Abstract
Gamification is increasingly expanding beyond traditional domains such as education and healthcare to business applications. Initially applied in B2C contexts, gamification has recently gained traction in intra-organizational settings, aiming to enhance employee engagement, motivation, and productivity. But organizations risk incurring sunk costs, employee dissatisfaction, and increased turnover rates if an implementation fails. Despite its growing adoption, research on organizational gamification remains limited, and existing findings are inconclusive. Establishing a robust understanding of the conditions under which gamification succeeds is crucial for advancing this field and providing managers with evidence-based insights. To address this gap, we investigate the effects of gamification on productivity in comparison to and in combination with monetary rewards in a real-effort task setting. In our experimental study participants complete a tiresome task in a limited time under gamified, non-gamified conditions and with or without monetary incentives. Initial results show no significant effects of gamification on productivity compared to no or monetary rewards. Nevertheless, an increase in baseline enjoyment was observed compared to non-gamified conditions. In addition, higher enjoyment in gamified conditions lead to an increase in solution quality.
