Abstract
According to the 2023 Brazilian Official School Census, 59.4% of municipal schools in Rio de Janeiro presented a quality index below the average of 5, a criterion defined by the Brazilian Ministry of Education to rank the quality of schools. This has raised questions about the sufficiency of the current Brazilian educational quality measurement system, which considers only a limited number of educational indexes. This study proposes a new approach to evaluate educational performance in Brazilian public schools, using the CoCoSo method, a multicriteria decision-making technique that combines compromise solutions and reconciles conflicting evaluation criteria. The analysis covered 997 schools and 6 criteria, such as school dropout rate, student failure rate, teacher retention index, and other relevant educational indexes. The results enabled a fairer ranking of schools, offering a new perspective on their quality and reality. This work contributes to the debate on improvements in the Brazilian educational system, offering a valuable tool in the decision-making process, and facilitating the understanding of the complexity of Brazilian educational inequalities. For future research, the inclusion of other educational indexes is suggested.
