Abstract

Cultural heritage plays a fundamental role in preserving the history and identity of the world’s communities. In this context, UNESCO promotes the intercultural understanding of this priceless heritage by including eligible sites on the World Heritage List. This prestigious award requires that cultural heritage sites have an Outstanding Universal Value (OUV) meeting one of the ten criteria established by the institution. Sustainable management of UNESCO sites is essential for their long-term value conservation. This process requires identifying and evaluating site-related challenges and defining effective strategies and intervention priorities. Usually, qualitative methods are used for this purpose, such as surveys, SWOT and Stakeholder analysis. However, to support and inform the process through quantitative measures, other methods are required. Within this context, this work applies an A'WOT to a World Heritage Site to assess challenges and define priorities for sustainable management. The integrated approach exploits the potential of both analyses. SWOT identifies the challenges and potentials of the area under investigation to develop appropriate strategies. The multicriteria evaluation allows to structure and evaluate complex scenarios, considering qualitative and quantitative variables to identify the most suitable solution. Furthermore, GIS is integrated to generate maps that visually represent key priorities, enhancing decision-making and stakeholders’ engagement.
