Abstract

The transition to renewable energy is critical for mitigating climate change and enhancing energy security, with wind power emerging as a key component in regional strategies. In Styria, Austria, where wind energy development is rapidly advancing, public acceptance remains a pivotal element for sustainable growth. This study introduces a novel mass-participation Multi-Criteria Satisfaction Analysis (Mass-MUSA) approach that integrates large-scale community input through a comprehensive questionnaire. By assessing environmental, economic, and social criteria, the analysis not only quantifies overall satisfaction levels but also employs clustering techniques to segment citizens into distinct profiles based on their responses. This clustering reveals nuanced insights into the primary factors driving support or opposition to wind energy initiatives. The findings provide a comprehensive understanding of local attitudes and offer valuable guidance for policymakers and energy developers. Ultimately, the study demonstrates how combining mass participation with advanced multi-criteria decision analysis and clustering can inform more inclusive and effective energy planning strategies for the future development of wind power in Styria.
