Overview of Special Issue
In recent years, a competitive market and a rapidly evolving environment have highlighted the necessity of flexibility and interoperability within the manufacturing sector. A higher volume of information, acquired through improved computational capabilities of industrial equipment, necessitates adequate processing and management. The rise of the industry 4.0 (I4.0) paradigm has paved the way for the development of the "smart factory" concept, an adaptable landscape that fosters a modular and digitized production facility capable of responding to fluctuations in the factory, supply chain, and customer requirements in real-time.
In this scenario, simulation emerges as an increasingly valuable and crucial resource. The fundamental technologies of the I4.0 serve as the foundation of a new simulation approach that builds on the widespread connectivity in production systems, providing real-time synchronization with the factory floor and replicating real-world behaviours in virtual environments.
The main goal of this special issue is to collect high-level scientific contributions that address novel approaches to the concept of Digital Twin in manufacturing, considered as the “cyber” side of the Cyber Physical Systems, the core capability to achieve smart manufacturing. Defined as a digital copy of a physical asset, Digital Twin is a system that can replicate, plan, control and directly interact with its physical side. The overall aim for the issue is to describe how Digital Twin technology can be used in different types of manufacturing plant. To this end, articles that present both theoretical problems and practical applications in different industries are welcome.
Subjects covered
Authors are kindly invited to submit articles describing innovative technical research, case studies and applications of simulation in digital twin systems. The list of suggested topics below should not be considered as being exhaustive and refers to the different paradigms and approaches that can be presented as part of the articles. We also include some suggested application areas, where both theoretical and practical applications can be proposed. Again, we are open to articles in application areas that are not listed here. Please contact the editors if you are unsure about whether your article fits within the scope of the special issue.
